Dual Enrollment

Many high school students are taking advantage of dual enrollment opportunities available in the Northwest Florida panhandle.

DUAL ENROLLMENT FOR COLLEGE CREDIT
"Dual enrollment is when a student is simultaneously enrolled in high school and college courses in either a community college or state university. The credits earned are counted toward both the high school diploma and either an associate degree, a vocational certificate, or a baccalaureate degree. In 1996 legislation was passed to allow registered homeschoolers free tuition, just as public and private school students have enjoyed for years.

"Homeschoolers have been provided an invaluable opportunity to accelerate their education and establish a college GPA tuition-free. This is an excellent way for a student to take upper level courses that you do not feel qualified to teach and to ease the student into college life. Students must take placement tests to see if they qualify and can handle college level courses but no grade point average is required. Entrance requirements vary with colleges, so individual schools should be contacted for further information."

PENSACOLA JUNIOR COLLEGE
High school students are able to take post-secondary courses to earn high school credits, while at the same time receiving college credits towards a Vocational Certificate or an Associate or Baccalaureate Degree.  PJC has recently reformed their policies concerning high school sophomores taking classes at PJC.  All juniors and seniors are welcome to complete a College Placement Test (CPT) before qualifying to take classes at PJC.  High school students must have a "Dual Enrollment Approval Form" signed by CIAS's principal before registering, so come by the school office to pick one up.  Contact Mary Eslinger in the dual enrollment office at 484-1659.

UNIVERISTY OF WEST FLORIDA
UWF has a limited dual enrollment program, predominately for Fine Arts students.

GEORGE STONE VOCATIONAL-TECHNICAL CENTER (Escambia County)
LOCKLIN VOCATIONAL-TECHNICAL CENTER (Santa Rosa County)
Students who are sixteen years of age or older or enrolled in grades 10-12 are eligible to apply for a job preparatory program at George Stone.  Admission to George Stone is contingent upon the mutual consent of the principal of CIAS and the directors of the vocational schools.  We wholeheartedly approve of students taking classes that will enhance their skills as adults in our world.

FLORIDA VIRTUAL SCHOOL
The Florida Virtual School, formerly the Florida Online High School, is an internet-based high school currently serving students throughout the State of Florida.  In partnership with affiliated schools, FVS makes instruction available at "any time, any place, any path, any pace" to Florida students, public, private, and home educated.  The courses are offered via the web using Jones Knowledge's e-platform and provide interactive, innovative content and instruction.  The credited courses of the school is based upon the Sunshine State Standards.  You will find more information concerning FVS on pages 30-32 in the High School Handbook.  Find more information at www.flvs.net

OTHER SCHOOLS
Other schools that are acceptable for dual-enrollment would include Alpha Omega Academy Online, BJU's Academy of Home Education, and Christian Liberty Academy Satellite School (CLASS).  These schools do NOT meet the legal Florida requirements for being a Florida-based umbrella school, but students who dual-enroll in these institutions are legally covered by CIAS.  This applies to the school listed below as well.

POWER-GLIDE FOREIGN LANGUAGE SCHOOL
Power-Glide has opened a school "to offer a dramatic departure from traditional learning and help each student to foster their natural ability to learn languages."  The Power-Glide Foreign Language School is accredited through the Northwest Accreditation of Schools and Colleges.  Enrollment is for students who want a certified language teacher as their instructor.  They must purchase the academic bundle, stay in touch with their personal language teacher, must have internet access and e-mail access.  Contact them at www.power-glide.com/school

HOMESAT & BJ LINC
Bob Jones University's HomeSAT (including BJ LINC) is a satellite school specifically to meet the needs of home schooling families.  They offer a wide range of courses ranging from Kindergarten classes to 12th grade courses.  Whether you want to use only one subject or use the complete curriculum, they have a growing number of classes programmed.  Contact them at 1-800-739-8199.

SWITCHED-ON-SCHOOLHOUSE
This program is Alpha Omega's CD-ROM curriculum.  It utilizes Windows interface to guide students in their schoolwork.  It guides the rate of student's progress and is based on mastery achievement.  Switched-On Schoolhouse also features an instant grading system, automatically records scores, and includes a lesson-plan feature.  It is available for grades 3-12.  Contact them at 1-800-622-3070.
